2022 Great American Cleanup

2022 Great American Cleanup –

Come out and join Keep Rabun Beautiful (KRB) during the 2022 Great American Cleanup.  March, April, May & June have been designated by Keep America Beautiful as the months to reduce litter, recycle, and beautify. Rabun County has a strong tradition of volunteers getting out and cleaning up our roads, planting trees and gardens, and recycling. Many of us have felt as if we were in a cocoon the past few years, and gathering in groups has not been recommended. Let’s re-emerge with an eye toward the incredible beauty of our county and make a difference.

Keep Rabun Beautiful has gloves, buckets, trash bags, reflective vests and pickers to share with anyone in the county that will organize a group of 2 or more, (we will actually lend to singles as well). These are stored at the Rabun County Welcome Center. Please choose a one, or two, mile section of any road in the county and plan a time to pick up trash that accumulated over the winter. It can be where you live, or drive or enjoy walking. It can be a waterfall, hiking, or biking trail.  Call KRB and sign up for your location, and plan to pick up supplies. We want visitors to see the beauty we live with, but we also want to enjoy the beauty ourselves. And, share pictures of you, your friends, bags of garbage, before and after, even beauty you see on the side of the roads.

We have wonderful recycling centers throughout the county. Take your glass, metal, and plastics #1 & #2, and turn them in. Look in your attic, and see if anything can be passed on to FAITH, Habitat for Humanity, Rabun Caring and Sharing. Spring is a great time to let go.

If plants are your passion, plant a garden, plant a tree. KRB recently gave away 450 trees which will be planted around the county, supplied through Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation and the Georgia Forestry Commission. The Old School Garden is a wonderful place for your passion, as is Terra Incognita Vineyard, where gardens can be allocated to locals who need some sunshine to plant.  We have seeds to share, just call and ask.

Several years ago, Lynda Hester organized a challenge for cleaning metal signage around the lakes. Let’s do that again. Look at your road, or your route, and think about what it needs to be litter free, or freshened up. Spring weather is here, or at least it will return soon for real, let’s get out and enjoy it.

KRB goals are to clean every major road leading in and out of the county, and every road that you see which needs attention. We have the supplies. Please be a volunteer and send us pictures.

We want to thank our sponsors who donated items and money toward the great cause of Keeping Rabun Beautiful.  An especial thanks this year goes to Cox Enterprises, Premier Sponsor, and Chick-fil-A, Supporting Sponsor.

Contact us for road assignments, supplies or seeds. Send us photos, stories, and numbers of bags of trash. Let’s work together to showcase our county!
